DD is battling a concussion from Middle School basketball. She took a shoulder during a rebound and landed on her back and hit her head, then about ten days later she got sandwiched between two girls and elbowed in the chin. First time no signs of a concussion, but the elbow put her down like a Mike Tyson upper cut and she immediately failed the concussion protocols. Athletic trainer at the school had us take her to the concussion clinic. They prescribed the no sports take it easy and let it heal, then after 4 weeks prescribed B2 and some other vitamins and now 2 weeks later they are prescribing another medication for her headaches and sleeplessness. Also sending her to a vision clinic to work on focus and tracking.

We have never had to deal with this and it is frustrating, any suggestions? DD is going nuts not beig able to play Bball or softball.

Sorry for the rambling post, just looking for some input to get her better (and letting some frustration out).

Thanks all,

Randy

Concussion are awful, the player is supposed to sit staring into space all day. I feel sorry for her and will pray for a quick recovery.

Not sure where you went - but if not here, time to bring in the big guns. If there, then you are in good hands I think, and although it is very frustrating and difficult for her (and you) - I think with these injuries, slow and steady wins the race.

UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program | Pittsburgh PA

BTW my DS had concussion as well, and neuropsychiatrist recommended a tea formulation that contained anti-oxidants, sounds crazy I know but it seemed to help- if I can find recipe, I will send to you (you will need to order from Teavana or some such place)

We are going to the Concussion clinic at AGH, the Dr. she is seeing is the Dr. for the Pirates and the High school football program in Western PA. Our good friend is a psychologist at PITT and has been a lot of help and is going to try and help us through. I just want to be the Dad and make it all better and can't it is very frustrating! Like I said, I am so lost when it comes to this, our first go round with it.

Would love to try the tea if you can find the recipe.

Sorry you're going through this dad. It's got to be rough. How old is your dd? Praying for a speedy recovery.

Concussions are awful! DD suffered a concussion in basketball last January. She took a charge from a girl who had about 8 inches and 30-40 lbs on her. She was thrown 5 feet and then skidded into a wall. She never remembers hitting her head so the doctors suspect her concussion was due more to a whiplash like injury (like shaken baby syndrome). She was out completely for 8 weeks and then had to take baby steps back in. The recovery was not what I expected at all. Sometimes it's hard to remember they are injured because they look fine - but DD was a nightmare. She was mean and short-tempered, she couldn't sleep, she would cry at the drop of a hat and her appetite changed (she didn't want to eat or wanted to eat a ton, and she didn't like some of her favorites anymore) - all of which are VERY unlike her. Once she returned to school she couldn't eat lunch in the cafeteria because it was too loud and too bright, she had to opt out of her technology class because she couldn't stare at a screen without getting sick and she had to avoid the passing periods because the noise and chaos made her lose it - she would cry or get very angry. It was a slow and frustrating recovery! She took the summer off from basketball (so she could play softball and break her ankle - grrr) and just started bball back in September. I love watching her play but everytime she has a game I hold my breath the whole time praying for no injuries.

We will be praying for your daughter...and for you! It is so hard watching them work thru this! But don't rush it - I know it's hard - for you and for her!

Dadofadirtlover, she is 12 years old. My little baby(even if she is taller than me now).

KPower, I could have written every word you said. Sounds identical to my DD. Her first injury was a charge that forced her to the ground and gave her whiplash.

Thank you all for the help and support!

Well she was cleared into the 5 step program yesterday! Hopefully she will get through the week with out symptoms!

Just in time for volleyball tryouts, AAU basketball tryouts and MS softball workouts!

I see a noticeable improvement in her manner and attitude, and she scored better on her concussion testing compared to her baseline given by the trainers this fall!

Thank you all that sent well wishes and helped us through this. Was a LONG 3.5 months.
