DD is heading into her sophomore year in high school and just made it onto an 18u showcase team. At tryouts we were told practices would be once a week for now. Would any of you know if this is standard for 18u?

In our area that is pretty standard. Especially if the kids have to travel from far away. My DD's team has kids from multiple states so anything more would be impossible.

Oh wow, hadn't thought about that scenario. Not sure if we have any out of towners, though. Ok, I just want to make sure this organization is giving me the most bang for my buck.

Very much normal at that age. More homework, after school events and other demands on their time. Pick a weekend time and practice for 3-4hrs. Top Gold placement teams will often practice both Saturday and Sunday.

We run practice once a week until the kids get re-acquainted with school, then we try to go 2x - 3x weekly, stressing to the team that
academics trump softball for weeknight practices. Weekend practice is mandatory!!

Many showcase teams don't practice or have non mandatory practices because many players live 100s of miles apart and just meet at the tournaments.

Well... just be careful when thinking about "bang for the buck" at the showcase age. If showcase is the priority, a team with low fees and lots of practice seems like a good value... but they might not be able to do the job as far as "showcasing" is concerned. Really depends what goals are, but more important than number of practices per week is the tournaments they are in, the fields they get on and their track record on college recruitment. Are they on the main complexes? Are they in the right showcases? Ask yourself if the schools that they have placed kids previously are in line with where you realistically see your DD wanting to play/attend?

Good luck!

It is standard...*BUT* your DD still needs to practice 4 or 5 times a week on her own.

She needs to be going to the cages and practicing her position on her own.

My DD is on a showcase team, and the fact that they don't practice much is a good thing for us. She doesn't need much team practice. She needs a team that can get her in front of the college coaches that she cares about.
