My DD is an absolute ball magnet. She bats lead off, plays 2nd and gets on base a lot (plus if there is an opportunity to put her in as a courtesy runner, out she goes).

This weekend:
  • HBP: 4 times (including a game winning HPB in the bottom of the last, 2 outs, bases loaded, full count pitch that whacked her right in the ankle).
  • Cleated twice covering second on a steal and on a throw from the outfield
  • Accidentally run over by a base runner twice her size while covering first on a bunt (the safety bag is there for a reason - so this doesn't happen)
  • Slid into two hard tag attempts (one safe, one not)
  • Dove back several times as a base runner on attempted pickoffs.
  • Dove full out for at least 5 or 6 grounders (some she got, some she didn't - but we absolutely know if she could have got there or not)

That seems about average for this season and last. She now wears padded sliders and just added soccer shin guards to her uniform.

I am extremely proud that she goes all out - but just like to see that some bruises get to fade before she adds more to her collection

I hear ya. My DD is 9, and I can't remember a time when she didn't have a bruise somewhere on her body since she learned how to propel herself across a room. There have been days when I half expect a call from her school asking us to come in and talk about the apparent beatings she's been subjected to.

Yep...same here. DD has a 3 inch gash on her left shin from being cleated. She didn't even realize she got cleated until she got into dugout...rolled down her sock and there was blood oozing. TG is was just a surface gash and not worse. So she has bruising around this gash, another bruise on calf of right leg, bruises up and down left thigh, and she's in rehab for bad shoulder/wrist. Funny thing is...she doesn't remember when or how she gets bruises (except when cleated).

With the exception of earlier this month, they were working on faking throwing to 2nd with runners on 1B and 3B...2B was to receive the throwdown by running towards SS while SS backed her up on 2B. DD was SS, and 2B missed the throwdown by this much. The ball hit the bag in a funny way...hit DD square on the cheek. She got a perfect seam mark on her cheek. Everyone at school thought it was fake or a tattoo because she didn't have any bruising (some swelling). Her HS softball teammates thought it was soooo cool. She proudly wore that one for about a week and a half. :)

Marriad- she just sounds like a great player, every one of those is a badge of honor.

Eric- if she is asked tell to say "daddy said to say I walked into a wall" that won't send up any red flags.

I understand the ball magnet! My dd lead her travel team 2 years ago for HBP. Was 3rd place last year. And led her high school team this year. She more than 3x her high school teams next closest player. In fact, in one game, she was HBP in all 4 of her at bats, by 4 different pitchers. The fact that she was pitching for our team, had momma more than a little bit fuming.... was she targeted by the other team?

We have taught her all along, an inside pitch that is too far inside is a free base. Turn towards the umpire and take it in the rear. Grit your teeth and by the time you hit second base, the pain will be gone.

Had a girl like that. If anyone got hit with a ball it was her. She played no differently than any other player on the team. At the end of the season party we bought a stuffed bear for her and gave her a bunch of small softball stickers to put on the bear in the places where she was hit.

Everyone got a fun laugh.

Season over yesterday... Only got hit twice this weekend so only one new bruise. She really has to learn how to turn into these pitches instead of getting the full brunt of it.

Time off for a few weeks so she is shut down unless she says otherwise. Time to heal (I hope)

If your DD is anything like mine, she' find a way to pick up a new injury no matter where she is. Just walking through the house has the potential for banging into doorways or tables, or tripping over the transition between tile and carpet. Playing basketball at school? Broken finger, and on the bench for the last Fall Ball game.
