Second guessing myself big time today. Feel that I really screwed up. DD's first tournament since nationals was this weekend, a college showcase in Des Moines. Drove thru a hail storm and very scary weather to get there. Could tell she wasn't feeling well on the drive but thought it was just nerves due to the weather. Shoud have known better because my DW and two boys had recently been ill with a stomach bug. Anyway, shortly after our arrival she started throwing up.

Kept her out of the saturday morning game, but she wanted to play in the afternoon. Played three games on saturday and 4 on Sunday. She didn't get sick again either day but she was way too nauseated all weekend to eat or drink. Just couldn't force anything down although she did have three or four bites of a sandwich Sunday afternoon. After the last game, she threw up several more times.

Now i'm worried sick about all the high fives (her teammates hit several homers) and potential exposure to her teammates. Do you allow your DD to play when sick? What's the protocol? Would you have allowed your DD to play? Should i apologize to the other parents?? Second guessing myself. Don't think I won "father of the year" this weekend.

What doesn't kill them, makes them stronger. Or something like that. I think kids need to work their immune systems a whole lot more than they do. Now if it was something like mono, I'd be upset.

DD has played with colds, a full blown sinus infection, with hives from an allergic reaction and with a ruptured ear drum.

I draw the line at stomach bugs though. Those things spread so easily for one and chance of dehydration leading to other problems is greater since she was not eating or drinking.

Live and learn. As a coach and mom with lots of experience, I would have sent her home, myself. Plus, some people just have weaker immune systems. I can't afford to miss work, so I am sensitive to being around sick kids.

It seems like DD is always sick, so yes she plays when she is not contagious. Like if she is on antibiotics, her choice.

She needs to be drinking though, I would like to see her eat something too but if she isn’t drinking she isn’t playing.

(And if she is playing I am drinking, different topic I guess)

Sounds like someone has it backwards. Any one of those three (in bold) could have serious consequences.

No I wouldn't have let her play with the stomach bug or anything that is listed above and I would be pretty upset with a parent that would knowingly let a kid play with something so contagious.

But don't give it a second thought. What's done is done, just don't do it again. And no, don't start calling the parents and upset them when nothing may even come of it. You did what you thought was best at the time and now you know that probably wasn't the best call. We have all been there and all done that.

She was cleared to play for all of them

She was on antibiotics for the sinus infection, had been treated for the allergic reaction (to sunscreen) and had seen an ENT for the eardrum which isn't something you can treat anyway, it needs to heal on it's own and the only thing she couldn't do was swim.

Would you have allowed your DD to play?

At some age, it is no longer up to the parents. Kids have to learn when they can play and when they can't. My guess is around 14YOA, you have to let them figure it out.

Geez...Jordan scored 38 points in the NBA finals with food poisoning.

Do you allow your DD to play when sick?

Your DD is an athlete. Athlete's live to compete and play the game. If she wants to play and you don't let her, she will *NOT* tell you next time she is sick. She will lie to you in order to play.

The best approach is to let her decide, but have a conversation with her and let her understand what might happen.

Food poisoning wouldn't be contagious. But, I have had it. I drank contaminated water, at a restaurant. I was too sick, to even call an ambulance. I suppose there are various grades of it.
