He's one of the best on slap hitting. One the the biggest things I see with slappers today is that they do not step on or near the front line of the batters box with their cross over step. They like to start deep in the box and that's a huge no no. Larry covers should cover this in his video, as I haven't seen it.

I agree, plus they take a negative step and give away the slap. What is taught now is bunt, slap or hit from the same form. My dd and I got to spend the day with Mike Bastian on slapping. He was in from China and he worked with her on slapping. I think we do a poor job of teaching slapping in the Midwest.

I hear you on the negative step. My lead off slap hitter was doing that, along with starting too deep in the box, and I tried to correct her but she kept telling me, 'That's what my hitting coach tells me to do.'
SL, No, I'm not in Ohio. I'm in WA.

BTW, the girl who said that's not what her hitting coach told her to do, she was mistaken. Later, after going back to some clinics, I asked her what she was told that made a difference and she told me that she wasn't supposed to be taking a negative step. WELL SLAP ME SILLY! I kept my mouth shut and said I would help work with her on that.

I think that slappers start deep in the box and use the negative move because it helps give them a running start as they make contact. If you think of the front line of the batter's box as a starting line in a race who would want to start there vs a running start from several feet back?

I want their left foot (ideally their left heel) on that line when they make contact with the ball. This means you set up accordingly in the box so that is where your cross over step is. Sorry for any confusion. And also sorry for the hijacking of this thread. We probably should start a slapper's thread.
