DD is on the small side too - 4'11" and 75 lbs at 12. She is also a fairly picky eater. Especially during tournaments. She doesn't like anything heavy or greasy. Can't stand it when the team goes out for burgers or has them brought back between games.

Our cooler usually has deli meat, cheese sticks and crackers. Lots of fruit (watermelon, berries and grapes), and chocolate milk. She also likes those premade smoothies by Naked or Odwalla. She does not love bars of any kind, but will eat a Tigers Milk bar in a pinch. She also likes those Ritz peanut butter sandwiches for a quick snack.

She has learned that she needs to fuel her body properly though. She catches for our team and last year refused to eat much during a 100 degree multi game tourney. She was talking with her coach after a game with all her gear on and all of a sudden her eyes rolled in the back of her head and down she went. Since then she has been very diligent about making sure she stays hydrated and that she eats the right amount of protein and carbs. I guess it took something "big" for her to realize how important what she eats is.

I am the parent, and just tired of fighting to get her to eat. She's a dang good ball player, but small. Talent wise she's as good as any, but with her size she's not as strong as majority. I've tried peanut butter, that worked for awhile, but now she's turned from that. Might try the clif bars.

I think you need to be very careful here. ''Fighting to get her to eat'' is not healthy. If this is your agenda and not hers, she could take control the only way she knows how and go in the opposite direction.

Try not to fight, but just want to make sure she doesn't get too low in fuel for her body. Being a diabetic myself I worry about eating. If we could eat soft tacos I wouldn't have to worry. She'll eat her weight in soft tacos. LOL

I could've said what I did to sound less judgmental. As parents, we all have agendas with our children. We want them to do things they'd rather not, in hopes they'll find it beneficial in the long run. My point was just that when it comes to food and eating, you have to be more careful than with other things, because eating disorders can result from power struggles over food. Most of the things we nag or push our kids about don't have such dangerous risks. I would be curious to get her pediatrician's opinion.

DD started HS at 4' 11" and about 90 lbs. Mid sophomore year she was 5'4" and 110 lbs. She's still growing. She's always been fairly picky. Lately her go to before a game is an Oatmega granola bar, her favorites are chocolate peanut crisp and chocolate brownie crisp. Tons of protein in these things.

My DD eats a lot of chicken as well but is willing to try new things. Recently though she is picking up my habit of being a extremely picky eater. At 7 she is 4'3 and in the 50-60 lbs range.

1. I'd go with some sort of high protein milk. One of those gives you about half a steaks worth of protein.
2. Fiber of some sort such as high fiber granola bars. (ones with chocolate are a hit with our team)..
3. Fruit smoothies with yogurt and peanut butter, use apple juice as base rather than milk.
4. Hydration before tournaments and should begin drinking water ad electrolytes 2-3 days prior to playing.
5. Dads and moms should wait until after tournaments to start drinking however. lol.

DD HS coach was giving a talk to the team about eating healthy. DD replied "do chicken nuggets count as good nutrition? Because if they do, I'm really healthy" :)

Of course, her nickname on the team is now "Nugget".
