What type of weightlifting or exercises can I use to increase bat speed and exit velocity. Looking to improve in these areas without hurting the effectiveness of the live swing.

I'm a believer in under and over-load training--where you do reps with a bat that is a couple of ounces less than your game bat (working on speed) and with a bat that is a couple of ounces more than your game bat (working on strength).

You can build up forearms on the cheap by taking a large dowel rod, drilling a hole through it, tying on a weight on a length of rope, and then using your forearm muscles to roll the weight up to the dowel and back down. I also like having DD toss a medicine ball and do russian twists with it or a kettlebell.

There's nothing wrong with simply doing pushups, sit ups and crunches every day. DD says she does them on the floor of her room every morning before she gets dressed--unless she has overslept. :)

All of this.

Do the rotational twist/toss of the medicine ball into a wall, too. Add two-arm swings with the kettlebell and you're all set.

I liked what Longwood University tweeted the other day "Strong Grip = Long Bombs!"

I like the sounds of it, but...strong grip means tensed muscles, which means slower muscles, which means slower bat speed, which means lower exit speeds, which means not so long fly balls. But maybe that's too many characters for a tweet? IMO, grip the bat firmly but lightly in the fingers as if it were a bird that you don't want to squish. But maybe that doesn't sound sexy enough to get a lot of followers?

strong grip

I should have made that more clear. It had a photo of a player caring Olympic plates with her fingers. She doesn't teach a death grip on the bat! Like Candrea, she feels grip and forearm strength to be one of the most important areas to focus on.

Oh good, this makes more sense! See what happens when I assume? And twitter will never amount to anything.

The medicine ball throws into a wall have done wonders for my distance on the golf course (Still cannot hit it straight though) they should work well for the softball swing.
