DD has been invited to participate in the USA Preps Nationals in Palmdale, CA based on her performance (according to the invitation) at a 2014 USA Preps tournament (she went down as an individual because her team was not going). We were impressed with the college coaches that were at the one she participated in - there were over 50 coaches at that tournament and there are slated to be closer to 60 at this one. And DD did very well. But because she is only a sophomore they couldn't talk to her much.

Do any of you have any experience in the USA Preps and this National Tournament? Sometimes it is hard to figure out if these are great, beneficial events or just okay events and moneymakers for the organization.

Here is a link...

Any opinions? Thanks!:)

Which of the schools that she has already contacted and that are also on her short list will be attending the event?

ADDED: I have not seen your daughter play, but from what I gather reading various posts she is a stud. That said I would think that given her talents that this is a pretty weak field.

She hasn't really decided on a school, other than her dream school which is D1 and (I believe) a bit out of reach. We are kind of at a loss on how to start contacting and decide on a school. She knows what she wants to study and that she wants to play. Beyond that...

Yes. IMO the list of schools is less than impressive with respect to the quality of the softball program.

First step is to get a list started. Choosing a school is not a selection process rather it is an elimination process. Start with geographic region. You are in Idaho, how does she feel about being 3,000 miles way playing in the Northeast? My DD is a Florida girl, hates the cold and wants her parents at as many games as possible. That narrowed her selection down to the states of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama. After you are set on general location start looking at other factors such as school size, quality of softball program, and academics. Eliminate as many schools as possible then start focusing on the small pool of possible schools.

Funny, DD got the same call. According to the conventional wisdom among her friends, this is an off they make to anyone who played on a "select" team at a USAPreps event, which means most of the girls that go "qualify". I'm going to call the recruiting person in her org. to see if the girls' assessment is accurate, but so far it sounds like nothing special. I'll toss any real information I get into this thread.

The last USAPreps event she went to back in Sept. in Sacramento was a pretty sad spectacle as far as organization, and the list of coaches deflated by half a few days before the event.
