    Default Another illegal pitch question

Pitcher puts both feet on the rubber, touches hands together, then starts her delivery. As her (right) arm comes back before starting forward motion, her stride (left) foot steps back off the rubber.

I've seen this from pitchers at a number of games (middle school) this year but nothing is called. I thought this was illegal, but maybe only NSA?

In school ball, you can generally step back.

    Thanks Amy.

It's not allowed in NSA or ASA, right?

You may step back, before or as the hand come together. As stated in the OP, illegal pitch.

And please excuse me in advance for this, but it's a pet peeve.....there's no "rubber" in softball. There is a pitching plate.

    The step back:

    - Is permitted under NFHS/high school rules.

    - Is not permitted in ASA (except for adult male divisions).

    - Is not permitted in NSA (except for adult male divisions)

    - Used to be allowed in USSSA until this year, when they changed their rule.

While we are at it, can we not call the "pitching circle" a "mound". Now that drives me crazy.....

Even though stepping back is allowed for my DD's High School... I have convinced her not to even try stepping back. It is not permissible in Travel Ball... so I don't want her to have to spend any time trying to get rid of it.

As soon as school ball is over there will be a rash of illegal pitch calls for pitchers stepping back. Happens every year.
