Runner on 3rd, 1 out. 3B picks up batted ball and has opportunity to retire batter at 1, but elects not to make throw, thus preventing runner at 3rd from advancing.

I scored it as an FC, but a couple of other parents thought it should be a single since the batter was attempting to reach 1st base.

Am I wrong?

So Cal
Assuming the out at 1B would have been made with regular effort, I would score it an FC. F5 made a choice to hold the runner instead of get the out.

You're correct if in your judgement the batter would have been out at 1B. Intent by the batter is not relevant in FC.

A fielder’s choice is credited in the following situations:
14.7.1 To a batter:
14.7.1.4 When a base runner is checked and no throw or a late throw is made, but the base runner would have been out had the initial play gone to first base.

You got it right. But is it any wonder so many girls in travel ball hit '.400' (.600) when parents believe every ball put in play should be a hit :)
