I have a tough time wrapping my head around this one...

Batter foul tips a pitch back to the catcher. Catcher catches the foul tip and the home plate umpire signals that. Meanwhile runner on first advances to second. After the runner reaches second she turns around to the field umpire and asks if it was a foul ball. Field umpire confirms that it was a foul ball. Runner begins to return to first and home plate umpire calls the runner out.

So help me out - is the runner out ?

Runner was called out after the catcher returned the ball to the pitcher. Runner was walking back to first when home plate umpire signaled the out... referred to it as "Abandoned the bag."

First off, most rule sets have no such rule as abandonment. If the umpire was not calling a lookback violation the runner would not be out until either the defense put her out or she entered dead ball territory. Second, the runner left the base because the base umpire told her it was a foul ball. It was the umpires incorrect information which caused the runner to leave the base. Fix it, out the runner back on 2nd.

Foul tips are live balls. Should have been a stolen base. If the ump told her foul ball she should be allowed to return to 2nd. If she started bac on her own she should be put out or called out for lookback rule
