Foul tip is not a foul ball. It is treated like a swing and miss.

ASA for sure. You're correct it cant be both. Hp ump called foul tip. Base ump called foul ball. Contradictions

First off, most rule sets have no such rule as abandonment. If the umpire was not calling a lookback violation the runner would not be out until either the defense put her out or she entered dead ball territory. Second, the runner left the base because the base umpire told her it was a foul ball. It was the umpires incorrect information which caused the runner to leave the base. Fix it, out the runner back on 2nd.

^^This.

To clarify things for myself (and maybe some others, based on a few responses?) - in this thread:

  1. It's a foul tip if:
    • the catcher caught it
    • catcher caught it = live ball
  2. It's a foul ball if:
  • the catcher didn't catch it
  • foul ball = dead ball

Is this correct? (for whatever the current version of reality is...)

Also - was there no discussion b/w the umpires at the time of the call? Or did the runner not say anything until later about why she returned to first?

A foult tip is hit/tipped sharply and directly into the catchers mitt. If the catcher move s her gloves its a pop up. If it goes foul without being caught it's a foul ball. Sharply and directly into the glove is the key for a foul tip

There was no discussion between the two umpires. The coach didn't even contest the call.

If I had to take a guess the field umpire gave poor information to the runner and didn't have the 'stones' to correct the plate umpire.

Thanks for all the responses - the only one at the field that seemed to have a problem with the call was 'some crazy father!'
