So Cal
These kinds of umps irritate me. It's not an ump show, it's a softball/baseball game. An occasional enthusiastic hammer-drop on a dramatic play is one thing. Having a choreographed routine for strikeouts is pretty ridiculous.

Right Here For Now
One of the big television networks did a news story once upon a time about the "Ninja" ump. He was actually asked to do that by the association in order to "spice up the game" and hopefully increase attendance as well as getting more people interested in actually forming teams and playing. The league/division/ whatever it is, (I can't really remember what it was) was on it's last death throes and was going to have to fold the following year. They credit him with not only bringing it back from the brink of death but it's actually growing by leaps and bounds now. Apparently he's one of the most sought after umpires on the West Coast. The funny thing is, this is not his real personality. He's pretty quiet and introverted but he loves the game so much that he feels he has to do whatever he can to grow it.

I'm not a fan of it but also not going to blast them either. I can see a need for it at times, say two not so great teams are playing and both or one have a coach that is sucking the fun and life out the players. This might lighten the mood and put the fun back in the game. Two great teams playing tight game tensions high parents and kids entire self worth riding on every play, some of this might lighten the mood and remind everyone it's a game. All game long I feel would become a distraction, except for the above umps should not be noticed except for the call.

Just goes to show you how easily those in the west coast can be distracted and entertained at the same time. :)
