I have looked for this particular play but couldn't find anything (ASA rules). Situation: we are the defensive team. R1 on 2B, R2 on 1B, batter hits a Single to RF. R1 scores on the hit, R2 is attempting to advance to 3B. The throw tips off of F5 glove then hits the base coach in the foot, the ball enters the dugout.

The base coach was in the box, and the tipped ball wouldn't have entered into dead ball area if not for hitting the coaches foot.

What is the correct ruling?

As long as the base coach did nothing to interfere it is a live ball that entered dead ball territory. 2 base award from the time the ball left the fielders hand.

Wouldn't this be a one base award because a defensive fielder touched the thrown ball prior to its going into dead ball territory? Unless I am misinterpreting the definition of a thrown ball. Maybe I'm confusing it with a tipped batted ball that goes into dead ball territory.

If the 3B coach was in the "coaches box" and it was unintentional that the ball hit him(or her) it is considered a live ball(just like umpires can get in the way but ball is still live). Ball goes in dugout runner on 3rd gets home. If the 3rd base coach intentionally hits ball, is in field of play or outside box (say in between 3rd and Home) its interference, a dead ball and runner would be called out, batter cant advance from last closest base.
Kinda sucks for your team.
Amazing game, played for 100 years and you still see new things constantly, even if its not always fair.

No. F5 never had possession of the ball.

The only time a thrown ball going out of play is a 1 base award is when it was a pitched ball and it is 1 base from the time of the pitch. A fair batted ball that goes out of play regardless of if it was tipped or not is a 2 base award from the time of the pitch. If the defensive player provides the force to a batted ball that propels the ball out of play then it is a 2 base award from the time of the impetus applied by the defensive player. A thrown ball is always a 2 base award from the time of the throw regardless of if another player tipped it.

Coaches box has absolutely nothing to do with the play. The coaches box is simply the area the coach is restricted to prior to the release of the pitch. After that the coach is free to move around the area to direct their players as long as they dont interfere in a play. A coach is not expected to simply disappear from the field when an errant throw comes their way. They should make an effort to not be hit, but obviously that is not always possible. They must, however, avoid interfering in a play by the defense. The coaches box is not a safe haven and does not provide any protection to the coach from interfering.

Thanks for the clarification. I was intermixing the rules.
