Hi All,

Played last night and situation came up where the hitter hit a ball towards the 3rd baseman. Ball was batted into fair territory down the line; 3rd baseman is inside the diamond and dives at the ball just foul. Umpire calls foul ball. Not sure how the ball can be called foul as the last place the ball touched the ground was in fair territory and the infielder touched the ball before it touched the ground again and went into foul territory.

Can I get a reference to the ruling on this one as I think the umpire got it wrong.

Also first post and just stumbled across this site; great website.

Cheers,
R

These things seem like common sense to me, but that's only because I grew up with baseball/softball. It would make just as much sense that it's where the ball hits the ground, like tennis, and like softball/baseball too in the outfield. But I learned a lesson once when I went to a MLB game years ago with a guy from Sweden who was a tennis player (not Borg). He couldn't understand why the batter wasn't out for hitting a foul ball. I had to concede that it didn't make sense that the player hitting the ball in fair territory was usually out while the one hitting the ball in foul territory usually got another chance.

You mean like the person who cannot return a serve that hits the net gets a another chance?

ASA Rule 1 - Foul Ball - A batted ball that settles or is touched (not caught) on or over foul territory between home and first base or between home and third base.
