Seems to me that the runner cut inside purposely to draw contact for obstruction (clearly she had no shot at a double). Is this clear-cut obstruction or can something like that be judged to be a no call or unsportsmanlike conduct?

PS Why the announcers don't even bring it up is beyond me...

I posted something similar on another site. The right fielder had the ball in possession before the runner got to 1st. Runner sees 1b in baseline and turns to make contact then proceeds to 2B. Runner is out by a significant margin. Obstruction called. So, then the question I posed as an additional example was to suppose a 1B covers 1st on a throw from RF. If she hits the bag first and then turns into 1B as if to go to 2B then is she awarded 2B. If so, then that would be a teach ever time as would coaching a batter/runner to hit the firstbaseman anytime she is in the basepath regardless of whether the batter/runner really had a chance at 2b.

Smart running, dropping her shoulder and intentionally running into the player to draw the call, however, borders on sportsmanship.

That is the clear reason that I always coach my first baseman to get away from the bag by a full step if you aren't making a play. Just no reason to be close enough to be bumped. Regardless if the runner had a poor chance of being safe they have to be given the opportunity to make an attempt without being impeded. In the scenario listed above though if the 1B is making a play on the ball (taking a throw) they would not be called for obstruction. We coach our base runners to make contact with any fielder close enough when rounding a base and then watch for the ump to throw out the fist and continue on.

Obstruction may be called, but 2B is not necessarily awarded.
It must be in the Umpire's judgement that the Runner would have made it to 2B safely, without the Obstruction.

Simply making contact with the fielder in the basepath is not the only criteria.
It is not a "free-pass"...

True and if it looks to the umpire's judgement that the runner is not trying to advance, but merely initiating contact with a defender, you won't get the obstruction call and a substitute will be needed.

On this play, the RF had the ball before the runner touched 1st base. In no way would that runner have been safe at 2B on a typical play.

BU still has to make that call.

BS. If the BU had moved inside the diamond - which (unless something has changed) is still the correct mechanic for a BU for a ball hit to the outfield - he would have seen that (a) F9 had the ball before Carosone made it to 1B and (b) that the contact with F3 was blatant and unwarranted.

No big surprise, though, that the umpire was out of position and gave Carosone the base. Just goes with the rest of the NCAA umpiring issues.
