Runners on first and second, no outs. Batter hits hard shot in the LC gap. Both runner take off on contact and Left fielder makes great catch and throws ball back in to SS whom tags out runner from first base then steps on second base. Is this a triple play? Or once they touch runner from first base is force out no longer in order? Or do all runners have to retreat on caught fly ball to original base no matter what order the outs are recored in the infield?

Triple play. On a caught fly ball, runners have to return to their base. If the runner was on the base at moment the defensive player touched the ball (i.e. tag up), they may run at the risk of being put out.

If it was a ground ball and the runner from first was tagged out then there would be no force out for the runner who started on second.

My daughter was the left fielder on a triple play last year. Hard fly ball to left and she caught it over the shoulder on a full sprint (1). Turned threw it to the cut off who threw it to 2nd (2) then over to 1st (3). It the other teams defense the coach called a hit and run and both runners had left on the pitch. Sure was fun to watch though!

It's not a force out. Whenever the batter is put out before safely reaching first base, there are no force outs to be had at any base.

This is a catch, then two live-ball appeals of runners failing to tag up before the catch.

There aren't any force outs available on this play!
