When you have a legit slapper that can pretty much lay down a bunt at any time slapping, and they lay down a bunt with runner on first and no outs and get put out at first base and runner on first advances, do you score it a sac bunt or an out? The batter is slapping and not squaring around to bunt like a non slapper would do for a straight sac bunt. I know what the offical scoring should be but i am wondering what most high level 16u and 18u teams score it in their own books.
Thanks

If she successfully moved the runner then it is a SAC. Same thing if it was a SAC fly or SAC hit. Slapping while doing it make no difference.

A slap is not a bunt. Therefore, a slap should never counted as a sac bunt. Also, if the batter is trying to bunt their way on base, it's not considered a sac bunt.

For the record, a Sac Fly is only credited if a run scores.

Agree w/ smddad, except that I believe any kind of bunt that moves a runner is a sacrifice, regardless of the batter's intent.

As far as the OP, I believe in following the rules of scoring and don't apply my own definitions.

Sac hit? Not sure I know what that is. But it t sounds like it might add 100 points to a batting average

So what do you call it when the batter hits, not bunts, behind the runner on 2nd to move her to 3rd? SAC grounder? SAC not a bunt or fly? Plain old SAC?

I began to question the SAC in a number of scenarios when it's not counted. I'm ok with the SAC bunt. You can tell it was intentional. The SAC fly is to random and can hardly be counted as intentional in softball.

The criteria to meet for a SAC fly.

  • Less than two outs
  • Batter hits a fly ball
  • Batter gets out because ball is caught
  • At least one base-runner scores
