We had a 3rd strike foul tip that went right into the chest protector and immediately was trapped with hand and glove and didn't touch the ground. We though it should be a strike out. Ump said it wasn't a strike because it didn't go directly to the glove. I know rule says that foul tip must go directly to glove or hand. Was the umpire right here? It didnt really have affect on the game, but was just curious.

If you know the rule, why would you question whether it was the right call? I may be missing something in your explanation of the play.

What I was thinking was it was trapped with the hand. Yes, it hit chest protector first, but the hand had to trap the ball soon after. Could that be Considered direct. Just wondered how it was applied in practice.

It's direct. In this sense, "direct" means the ball goes straight from the bat and whatever it hits is the first thing it touches.

The problem here is that the ball went directly to something (chest protector) other than the catcher's hands or mitt. So, it's not a foul tip. It's just a foul ball.
