Can outfielders start positioned inside the infield? We play USFA and ASA 12-U.

I've looked up for a rule that stated they must start at the edge of the grass but I can't find any.

Thank you.

This is usually a local rule when you have 4 OFs. Once you get to 3 they just need to be in the field of play but anywhere they want.

Unless you have some local rules you have only 3 restrictions on where players can be at the start of the pitch as far as I know.

1 - Pitcher must be in the circle starting on the rubber.
2 - Catcher must be in the catcher's box.
3 - The other 7 fielders must be somewhere on the field in fair territory.

In the younger age groups there are a lot of local rules that require outfielders to play with at least one foot in the grass. This prevents coaches from stacking all the defenders in the infield against weaker batters.

Thank you guys, I'm coming from league play where the outfielders had to start in the grass and coaching select for the first time. I wanted to build a "small-ball" team and we do a lot of slapping and bunting and we have been very successful so other teams now bring in their infielders very close to the plate and their outfielders to where regular infielders usually play to try to stop the short game.

You need to work with your players on the full hitting package. If the batters can bunt, slap and hit away with equal ability there is no way the defense can afford to move all their players around to try and cover just small ball. If the defense pulls their players in, your batters need to be driving the ball past them, when the defense backs up, thats when the small ball comes out.

I would like to see that. :) I can see bring 1 OF into the IF, but all of them.

Some younger players don't like the OF anyways, I guess that takes care of that. :)

Most of the girls I have taught how to slap bunt are the fast girls that I brought from league, none of them are left-handed so just teaching them to hit from the left side has been a challenge. These girls are not "select players" they are just starting travel ball but they have speed and you can't really teach that. My next step is teaching them the hard slap so that they can find holes in the defense, if they can make it through the outfielders (that play all the way as infielders) then it's off to the races.
