Hard to believe there is an umpire out there who has never heard a Xeno considering they came out in 2011 and are EXTREMELY popular, at least in our area. I think 11 of the 13 girls on our team swing a Xeno or LXT.

At the 18U Western National this past week, bats were being checked at the same time as the teams were checking in. I was observing the bat testing process and got in a conversation with one of the coaches about bats in general and some of the things about a bat that are checked in a pregame inspection.

While I was talking abour rattling sounds when the bat was shaken, he (coach) make a remark about the weird sound the Xeno makes when it hits the ball. I explained to him about how the manufacturer designed the bat and why it makes that distinctive sound. He was amazed and told me that he had never heard that before.

This was a team from Northern California...hard to believe that he didn't know what caused the Xeno to make that disctintive click when the ball is hit.

Interestingly enough, ASA's August 2014 Rule Clarifications and Plays mentioned this bat (well, not by name - just bats with the characteristics of the Xeno).

ASA said:
Rule 3, Section 1A:
We have received several questions and concerns about bats that make strange noises when you hit the ball, drop the bat or hit the bat against the ground. We also have reports of umpires pulling bats from games due to a strange noise they may hear. The cause of the “weird sound” in these bats is due to the design and not due to the bat breaking down. The bat manufacturers have come up with designs that will keep the ball from going over 98 MPH batted ball speed, be somewhat tamper proof and still be a good bat for the game of Slow Pitch Softball.

How a bat sounds when it hits the ball or ground does not indicate that the bat has failed. Rule 3, Section 1A, which states “shall be free of …. Rattles…”. This part of the rule should be verified by shaking the bat, not hitting the bat against something. If you shake the bat and it rattles in any way, we should remove the bat from play. If you shake the bat and it does not rattle, but sounds funny when hit, it is more than likely due to the design, not the bat being broken.

I still don't know what the umpire on the field heard, but if it doesn't rattle when shaken, it should be good to go no matter what sound it makes when it hits the ball or your hand/ground/assistant coach.
