"Swim" is a term reletive to the shoulder line......A "swimmer" is someone who swings the lead arm outside/behind the shoulder line.....

Depending on a particular style, or even a particular pitch.....The shoulder line may be more open or more closed. The the glove may appear to "swim" more when the shoulder line is more closed as it seeks alignment, and less when the shoulders are more open.......

In her case, she starts with the glove hand on the rear leg under had back shoulder, and "swims" her glove to "in line" with her front shoulder......Therefore......She is NOT "swimming" in a negetive sense........

I've said many times on this forum that people have to be REALLY CAREFULL when diagnosing and correcting what they consider "swimming"........You can do as much harm as good if you don't know what you're looking at...........

If Amanda here is not "swimming" then the concept has got me all wrapped around the axle.....

If ya go to the below video, and freeze-frame at 0:54, you can see Amanda's glove pointing somewhere inbetween home and first base. You can also see on that frame that the glove is "out-of-line" with the shoulders,....albeit maybe 30 degrees.

Softball tips: How to throw a fastball - YouTube

Don't want to make a mountain out of a molehill but my mind at one time was a wreck on the "swimming" thing a while back when somebody said my DD was doing something horribly "wrong". I then found Amanda's motion (and many others at that level) and subsequently "filed" that advice.

I think we definitely agree with your comment on being "really carefull".

    (oops - & sorry for a potential hijacking here - I will stop :-) )

Swimming, I consider when the arm is pulled behind the shoulder line as Boardmember described and when it pulls the shoulder back and therefore forces the throwing shoulder forward to a closed position. This is the point when a correction needs to be implemented.

How bad does her back and shoulder hurt after the game?

An instructor taught her to pitch like this?

    Dangerous.

I never follow thru down telegraphes the pitch on a roll over drop. The hand should always follow thru up like a fastball.

Hal skinner I don't agree with your analysis

she is swinging the ball back too far in the backswing. Her push off looks great. Problem is her follow thru.

Well rubberbiscuit, the term "swimming" usually refers to a habit of flailing the glove arm and hand wildly to the left side out of the power line to crank the shoulders closed, at least in their mind, to increase power. I think this girl's name is Scarborough isn't it? She is doing just the opposite. She is "swimming", not in the classical problematic sense, but actually doing it to keep her shoulders open! It is literally an asset and enhancement to her mechanics.

Yup - sorry I was being completely sarcastic & know it's Scarborough. (My sarcasm takes me over too much - at least my wife keeps telling me that :-) )

But to respond to your description => God bless! A "swimming" desciption and assessment that actually makes sense to me. Thank you!

But this leaves a big hole of confusion in this very little brain of mine => what does a "problematic swim" look like and without seeing the outcome of the pitch (speed/accuracy), how is it determined a "good swim" versus a "bad swim"????
