In my opinion, drawing conclusions from this study can be misleading. It's a study of what WAS 15 years ago. At that time, most pitching instructors were teaching pitchers to slam the door closed. It was considered an essential element to creating speed. The fact that these pitchers were "only" 45-52 degrees closed could be a reaction to fighting against that teaching.

We have learned much about pitching since 1996, thanks in no small part to high-speed video. I would love to see this study repeated to see if the results are the same. If not, why not, and which way did they go?

Ken,

15 years ago most pitching instructors were NOT teaching to slam the door. I was like most instructors thinking that the hips at 45-degrees was where they should be for the best and safest mechanics. When the report came out, I found out I was mistaken and 52-degrees was the safest and the best for performance. I was off by 7-degrees.

Then I started thinking and realized that I doubt if I could tell with my own eyes if they were at 45 or 52! As long as they were at as close to 45 as I could tell, I was happy and they did well.

By the way, if you read the opening statements of that report, they DID use high speed cameras.

The Steadman-Hawkins Institute is STILL the premiere organization when it comes to preventative sports medicine.

I believe that all but a couple of these Olympic Caliber pitchers were also throwing a riseball. The most aggressive stride and speed AND resistance against the stride foot.

The safest mechanics for the female shoulder complex is exactly the same now as it was when this report came out.
