this grip can cause the ball to break inside. Also it is too deep in hand to have a lot of speed. Looks more like an inside change up grip

that looks like a change up grip to me. A rollover drop loses a lot of speed and that would make the pitcher lose even more.

It would be great to see some updated information in this thread. I don't know which posts to trust from Hal and I don't recognize most of the other posters as being people that I am familiar with - having only been on the site for about 18 months. Would love to have input from a few of the great trusted gurus on here to share their ideas on grips.

Thanks in advance!!

Opinions on grips are probably more varied than those on Chevy vs ______. Play around with grips and find what works for you. Folks can say "do this" or "do that," but ultimately you'll find what works best for each spin. You may even find 2-3 grips (or more) for a given spin. I like to demonstrate that I can throw any pitch with almost the same four seam grip to show it's not so much the grip, but the feel and the motion to get the spin that probably matters more... Experimentation is huge for spin (grip) development.

I would like to see some more pics of different grips. I understand what your saying about grips being unique to each pitcher and the best way to figure it out is to experiment. It's just nice to get some ideas from examples then I can play around with it from there. I've googled softball grips, didn't really find much.

Ken, if you can throw any pitch with any grip. My question is: do the laces have anything to do movement? DD's ball moves quite a bit but alwsys looking for that next level. Thnx

I don't have the answer to how seam orientation affects movement. I hear/read that there is not much difference between 2 and 4 seam spin. Hopefully someone familiar with the science of it can say more. What I can say is that some grips just feel better with certain seam/finger orientations. I suggest playing around with different grips and cues to see what works best.

I'd love to see a study done with several pitchers throwing various pitches and measure the results.

Courtesy of Hal Skinner.

The first image shows the "finger tip" rise ball grip. The second image shows the "knuckle" rise ball grip. The third image is the "fingers together" rise ball grip. The final image shows the "fingers apart" rise ball grip.

I had not been back to this thread in awhile so thanks for bumping it up with some posts! I had some folks agree that the grip I posted in another thread could be thrown as a riseball and sure enough Sluggers had posted a courtesy of Hal Skinner similar if not same grip (pic 3) my daughter has been using. We had initially thought it was a cut-rise but I am good with just a riseball grip. Anyway, good to see we were not too far off the mark with at least 1 variation of the grip.IMG_1074.JPGIMG_1075.JPG

There was a great post about a horse shoe change up for small hands. My daughter has the tiniest hands I've ever seen and that grip has been easy for her to perform and has a similar spin as a fastball.
