We are taking a break from softball for awhile. DD made her school volleyball team. They practice 5 days a week. How long is a good break from pitching? DD struggled going from 10U to 12U this year. Went from #1 to #3 pitcher and fought back to regain her spot by the end of fall.

I'm sure everybody has different opinions on how long to rest the pitching arm, but we try to take off about 4 weeks for pitching. But, this normally breaks down to a 3 week and a 1-2 week time off. Although we are not pitching during our down time, DD still works on her spins for different pitches. Think it's up to the individual on how long to take off.

We take Dec off pitching. Well, we don't go to lessons and we don't bring up practicing. If she wants to practice we don't forbid it or anything. We take a break mid-Aug through mid-Sep too. Our PC doesn't approve I don't think but I like her to have periods of time where she doesn't feel obligated to pitch at all if she doesn't want to, in addition to the physical break. JMO :)

DD took 3 solid weeks off from all softball. in the 4th week she attended a pitching clinic. The rest of that week she practices 30 mins twice (going through drills she learned at the clinic). We are now up to practicing 30 or so minutes 2 days at home as well as one lesson a week with her instructor. Things will start to ramp up in the next few weeks as she will start to get back together with her team for practices in December.
I thought it was important to have a mental as well as physical break. eased back in so she didn't forget everything. She will be good to go by March :)

we just started back up with pitching yesterday,
after last touching a ball Oct.15 at a play-day.

the kid is refreshed and rejuvenated,
and eager to get back to work.

and her throwing really didn't exhibit all that much "rust", surprisingly.
She seemed more 'body aware" to me.

My daughter also plays volleyball and that combination tends to be tough on her shoulder. So we shut her down for pitching during the entire volleyball season. 1st of August through Mid October. After VB, we just do long toss and maybe some simple drill work until mid-December. Mid December is the start of winter training and by then she is ready to get after it. I think the mental break is whats best for her. there is nothing wrong with getting away from it for a few months.

Makes me super nervous when they take breaks but it does seem to do them good. For DD, her focus has been on volunteering and school so I am just sitting back letting her relax and focus on those things. She is still working out though...and HS coach has them staying after for a bit to pitch. Mostly worried about muscle memory in hitting...in my mind, I feel like a break = $$ down the drain (from all those lessons and practice), but I guess I need to chill and focus on the $$ I am saving on the break from lessons. LOL.

Appears my DD is the same age as OP's. She started practice this past January, tournaments in March thru June, middle school ball in August thru September, then fall ball thru mid-November. She is in the middle of school basketball right now. We haven't picked up a softball since the last tourney, and we aren't expecting her to start throwing much til January as it will all start again. Her team will have a couple of December practices (indoor hitting, etc). We believe she needs the mental break.
