My DD's travel coach has recommended the team to go to a college softball camp that will be in our area in jan. I looked up the camp info and there will be a long list of college coaches that will be there so it seems to be a very good camp for her to attend. Dr sherry Werner will be a guest there also. I don't know much about her but it seems from what I have heard here she teaches HE. Has anybody sent their DD to a camp for the exposure but also knowing the instruction she will most likely be hearing is not correct.

I've met Dr. Werner. She is a great person.

SO:

Dr. Werner was instrumental in promoting softball to make it the sport that it is today. She fought, along with many other women, to establish softball as a major D1 sport. The SEC and the BIG 10 fought tooth and nail *AGAINST* softball. The SEC was particularly obnoxious. The SEC's position was about as sexist as you can imagine. It was a battle that last decades.

(To be fair, after the SEC was beaten into submission and agreed to implement softball, it implemented softball better than anyone else.)

Every girl who gets a scholarship to play softball owes Drs. Werner, Lopiano, and others big time.

Dr. Werner was one of the earliest people to push the scientific study of pitching motion, just like other sports.

Dr. Werner teaches HE. She is not current in her understanding of softball.

That does not mean she shouldn't be respected for her contributions to softball.

I agree that Dr. Werner deserves our respect and gratitude for her many contributions and accomplishments. But to the OP's question, do not let anyone regardless of who they are or what they may have done in the past teach your DD to pitch using HE. The list of these individuals is lengthy and impressive and they must be avoided like the plague.

I hope that I didn't sound like I was attaching her character. I'm sure she is a great person, I just don't want my DD being taught bad mechanics. I'm thinking that since it's just a 2 day camp that she should be ok. I'm just going to tell her to be respectful but don't change her mechanics.
