Hello softball fanatics! I am making a pitching lane in my back yard and need a little guidance. Does anyone know what type of lighting I need to get? How many poles stationed where with how many lights on each? Wattage? Type? Also, any input on dirt/clay mix (cost efficient) would be appreciated as well. I have researched all of this but I would like some input from people I trust with experience. Thanks for your help!

I would start with pitching Matt, then build it out to real circle.

Do not care about pitcher to much but the C needs to see the ball.

I have just 1 set of work lights which serves for us, not sure it would be OK if DD threw 65mph. More lighting and armor would be needed.

How much lighting you need depends on how hard your DD throws, how much movement there is on her pitches, how old the catcher is, how fat and out of shape the catcher is (slow reactions) and how blind the catcher is. I used to take my DD up to our neighorhood tennis courts when she was younger, but as I have gotten older, fatter and blinder I really try to avoid catching at night whenever possible.

I think that starting conservatively is fine. I use scrap stall/shop mat cut to 6x24 for rubbers. Drill 6-8 holes around the edges and set them with gutter spikes. You can stop by your local home/garden store and pick up a couple shop lights on stands:

Depending on your soil, you might be fine with what God gave you. Otherwise, it's worth it to stop by the local university and chat with the field crew about how to maintain a clay circle (or mound). It requires knowledge and some daily maintenance to keep it up. Moisture control is important. A watering can, a good tarp and a tamper are helpful.
