My daughter has a problem blowing thru with her body, arm, basically everything. I done some digging and came across the stop dead drill. I was wondering if anyone has ever had any luck with it and if so am I understanding it correctly in that she just tried to stop her hand as soon after release as possible and is this supposed to help her arm from blowing thru too? Thanks

Early in the process I have my pitchers not completely release the elbow from their side to encourage good IR until they get a feel for the isolation of the upper arm against their torso. Whether that looks like the drill you mentioned, I don't know but it sounds like it. Obviously after they get the isolation mastered you want to release the elbow and shoulder and chase the pitch and finish with what Java Source describes as the "let the prince kiss the hand" position. ;)

No, that is not correct.

The body stops slightly before release but the arm continues to move after release. She should *NOT* try to stop her hand after release.

This is the great Sarah Pauly.

The best drill is a "modified" walkthrough. Here is a video about the walkthrough:

The modification is that you have the pitcher raise her right leg (for a rightie) after release and make her keep her right leg up until the catcher returns the ball to her.

Great video!

Blowing through your release can easily be a result of a problem waaayyyy upstream. IMO these are the key frames that ensure that Amanda will not release out front (since she will be planted well ahead of it)...

Amanda_drive_slow.gif

Key measurables:

1. Does her drive foot transition from push to lift at or before the arms are at 3 o'clock?
- If not, need to work on drive mechanics
- Does she run with decent form and a natural lean forward?
- If not, you might consider investigating for glute activation

2. Is her stride foot planted (square on the ground and starting to absorb pressure) at 9 o'clock
- If not, need to work on basic synchronization

3. Does she stop drifting her hips forward within a frame or two after foot plant (#2 above)?
- If not, need to firm up the landing since it can lead to an out front release

Have her do a walk through. After release, she is to stand *ONLY* on her left foot. She is not to lower her right foot until she receives the ball from the catcher.

Have her do about 1000 of these and she'll be fine.

Are you talking about her body follow through after the pitch? I mistook the issue as her arm blowing past (late release). It's a little hard to work with that embedded video and the angle is a little funny, but it looks like her arm appears to have turned over correctly (behind her hip). She's good for checkpoints 1 and 2 for sure, 3 is a little hard to tell in the video, but I think it looks ok.

Dead stops can be helpful, but right now your daughter needs to work on loosening up the lower arm and letting it whip. The arm blows by the hip pretty straight with almost no lock and minimal IR advantage due to lack of lag/flexion.

I'm also seeing an effort to muscle with the shoulders--kinda like slamming the door.

I'd have her work a little on posture, adducting the knees and using the glove a little more efficiently.

I like slugger's suggestion of driving into and resisting against the plant foot, but would ask her to hold briefly and fall back onto her stride foot to help feel the upright and almost rearward posture first, then build up to walkthroughs once she really has whip down.
