Totally agree about the drop ball. One of my best pitchers throws a really good drop curve. I cringe when it's time to practice that one. Like Coach James I go side saddle to protect my "self". And I have gone over backwads of the bucket several time, they find that quite amusing.

When my dd was learning the drop curve. Sometimes it would just curve, other times it would just drop, the. It would go straight, the. It would drop and curve... Sometimes the movement was subtle, other times fall off the table type movement. It's the pitch that made me buy catchers gear.

As my DD has gotten bigger, faster, stronger I have become older, slower, and blinder....not a good combination! My two least favorite pitches to catch are a drop ball and a rise ball. Drop balls have a tendency to bounce, and I learned the hard way to move the plate to avoid the front lip that can cause the ball to jump up and bite me! Riseballs are difficult because often my glove crosses in front of my eyes and I temporarily loose site of the ball.

Drop ball... sometimes it just isn't where I thought it was going to be - and it hits you. A great curve tends to just not get caught.

It has got worse because my DD's catchers now come out and catch her lessons 90% of the time and we do a lot of live BP so her practicing pitching is often within the team setting - where we have catchers as well. So I am not catching her as much as I used to.

So she throws harder and with more spin - and I am not used to catching her as I once was. Not a good combination.

Right there with you!! I used to catch for her several times per week, now it can be several weeks in between opportunities. DD has been working on a riseball for several months. During the spring it was nothing more than a high fastball. A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to catch for her. When she got to riseballs the very first pitch tipped off the edge of my glove and took the hat off my head. Very close to being a bad day for me :) I was not expecting it.

This is such a scary read for me. I can barely catch my DD's fastball. Plain old fastball and she's 9. Poor kid. I imagine by this time next year my catching career will be completely over.

DW tried to C DD, 1 pitch she was done and got the kid next store and gave him a few bucks.

(HC this year lasted 2 pitches then figured out it was a bad idea.)

Well looks like drop ball is in the lead. It took some adjusting but with the drop with exception of hitting lip of plate I got used to it. Looks like curve or curve variations are second for most but top of my list with rise in third. As far as the one poster about chasing the change, I would say everyone can count that one every pitch when they start learning it.
