Just entered the fastpitch world this year with my 10 year old. I love seeing articles like this. Wish video was available then like it is now so we could see him pitch.

Not for sure who this guy in the video is, but a video of a pitcher using slingshot motion.

Hope the video works!

Peppers, that is not slingshot. That is called MODIFIED pitch, it's popular in the NE USA and Wisconsin. There are 2 kinds of Modified: 9man and 10 man. In 9man, the pitcher can sling shot like any old timer fastpitch pitcher.. In 10 man, the pitcher cannot snap his elbow, cannot cock the wrist, and has to "slam the door" with the ball/hips. This guy is boarderline legal in 10man. I think it just looks faster than it is because obviously that hitter isn't very good to swing/miss at a modified pitch with zero movement. LOL

This looks more like the old submarine (side arm) pitch like Kent Takculve from the Pirates then fastpitch.

What kind of speed could a good modified pitcher get?
(Also looks like he's at about 40')

Never seen that type of pitching. No men's fastpitch or modified around here. Interesting to see what the modified looks/looked like.

Bill - my argument has always been that fastpitch is all about optimal arm whip mechanics as evidenced by all of the slingshoters in the day who could really bring the heat (without leap and drag drive mechanics). With all due respect to Javasource, while great "drive mechanics" may add a few mph and and get you a little closer to the batter (less batter reaction time), arm whip mechanics is the holy grail of fastpitch pitching...you perfect that and everything else is gravy.

Rocketech, I agree.. Arm whip is huge. So are legs. This is why I do NOT subscribe to Rick P's philosophy that the majority of power is generated from a simple slingshot motion.... Rick pardon me if I am misquoting you. That is the gist of what I got from you before. If that was true, pitchers today would still be doing it. Pitchers would still be doing hello elbow and hitters would be squishing the bug. Some do... but not the best ones. Slo motion cameras have made what we THOUGHT was happening into the limelight.

The difference between Kent Tekulve and a modified or FP pitcher is, the ball has to be released within inches of the body. Tekulve is clearly outside of that limit.. I forget if it's 6 or 8 inches of the body.

Modified is claimed to be a "hitter's game." but how good of a hitter do you need to be to hit a straight ball with not much velocity? 9 man modified with it being slingshot and the pitchers can throw movement is much harder. I went to the Nationals for it one year and finished 2nd. I just threw slingshot against a truly unbeatable team... a team that later went into Fastpitch and I stayed with for many years, NY Gremlins.

From my own personal experience, Ive noticed if the Drive is off its really hard to get good velocity even with a good whip. If you push late, land late its gonna throw off your whip. If your going up instead of out, when your arms are ahead of your legs etc... So many things in the drive can rob you of velocity. Idk, It may be that this is thing my dd struggles with so its what stands out to me more, but I think great velocity comes down to good timing.

Moth, remind me, how old is she? If her drive is messing with her whip, it's a mental block. She's thinking about one, neglecting the other. Maybe she just hasn't grown into her body yet? She'll get it. Sometimes when kids hit growth spurts, they lose control of their body. Like Clifford the Big Red Dog... they don't know how big they are and how to use what they got. My Karate instructor used to tell me if he had my arms and legs (for reach) he'd have never lost a world championship. It took me YEARS to figure out what he meant. Finally I got it but, I didn't got to a world tournament. :(
