trying to find out how much, if any, valgus stress is placed on a pitchers elbow in fastpitch? DD has inflammation of her MCL (ulnar ligament). DH and I have always noticed she doesn't have great overhand throwing mechanics and have made attempts to change her but not much luck. She presented with inner side forearm pain right below her elbow last week. Ortho says its the medial ligament. Strange thing is it only hurts when she pitches. Not really much pain when throwing overhand, and this type of injury is usually associated with overhand throwing and I can't find any info about underhand. . So, I've been trying to research if pitching mechanics could have contributed to this or if it really is just her terrible overhand throwing... and if the elbow is not stressed during pitching, then why it hurts her during pitching. (to add she lightly brushes her hip, but I've literally watched 20 views and angles of her pitching and I just don't see any hard contact of her arm to hip.) She says her arm hurts during the downswing of her pitch and at release.

Not a Dr and I have no clue about her diagnosis, but I would not by surprised if she bruised that area using her current form:
-Straight arm
-Hips too open at release
-Very little brush

I see a set up for bumping the hip bone with that spot on the arm. Get the hip into a better position to promote brush--not bonk. I know it seems counterintuitive, but setting the stage for more forearm contact will often resolve bruising. Work for the elbow area making initial contact behind the hip bone (with a flexed elbow) and the forearm wrapping/rolling/brushing in the soft area below the hip bone.

Can't do this without a flexed elbow (IR threads and javasource's videos) and a better focus with the drag leg. To get the hip into a better position to promote brush, she can focus on these points:
-Drag the toenails on the ground
-Pull the drag shoe laces forward
-Pull the insides of the knees into each other

These suggestions are based on what I've seen with the kids I've worked with and so far it has resolved hip, elbow and upper inside forearm bruising. Can't promise anything for your daughter, but these points will help her pitching overall.

Definitely check/improve her overhand throwing as well. Especially when I spend time on a bucket, I fudge on whipping my throw and get elbow pain. It goes away as soon as I remember to whip my throws.

Don't try anything without the doc's approval. (Hopefully Orthodoc stops by with a professional opinion.)

Hope this helps,
Ken
