My opinion will obviously be in the minority in this thread, but based on watching DD play D3 for 4 years (including probably 20 games v. top 25 competition), the majority of pitchers are still hitting and playing other positions when they're not pitching. Just another perspective to consider!

Good thread. Soon to be 14YO DD pitcher still bats (around 5th in line-up) and if she wants to play Varsity next year as a freshman, she will need to improve her batting/outfield skills since the Junior pitcher ahead of her has verballed to a major Big 12 program and is very good. With this in mind, she has started focusing on more regular batting instruction and improving her outfield fielding skills which is her secondary position (3rd position is 1st base). I want her to be a well-rounded ball player in case this pitching thing doesn't work out?:)

My daughter enjoys playing 2nd when she isn't pitching. She had guest played for teams that ended up using her more on 2nd base than they did pitching. If she don't get to pitch in college…well, 2nd base is an option…she prefers pitching though.

I am really not concerned, I was just curious about others who have pitching kids and when they had the bat taken away, it happens at some point to the vast majority of pitchers, for JAD it sounds like her college coach is going to have to pry the DeMarini from his kid's hands. Sounds like Sluggers and Riseball's kids went a little more quietly. If my partial genetic duplicate really wants to continue batting, and I mean really batting, not just in pool, she can achieve that. I doubt she will cross home plate again on non-home run at bats though because base running has definitely gone the way of the dodo and aside from me running really fast in the opposite direction there is no way to make her faster.

I really hope my DD does not bat in college, because that means they have at least 9 players who are better hitters...and she would prefer the run support vs. at bats!

I would also like to point out that if a pitch-n-sit player is injured and can no longer pitch their softball careers are OVER, while a pitcher who can play a secondary position and can hit could have a chance to continue playing.

I watched James Madison beat LSU last night and two of their pitchers were in the batting order! One of them was injured sliding into second so that decision may come back to bite the HC in the azz!
