DD is learning to throw a riseball, and more importantly, I am attempting to learn how to catch one. Unfortunately, my age and reflexes are making this difficult. I am so used to the ball dropping, that the rise seems to catch me off guard, even when I know it is coming. I have had several close calls where the pitch will tip off the webbing of my mitt and sail over my head. Luckily I have not been hit yet, but I am sure it is only a matter of time. I started looking at catcher's helmets but I am currently considering buying a umpire's mask instead. After all, that is all the protection blue has behind the plate (headgear at least). What are your thoughts on this? Is the umpire mask sufficient? Or should I go all out for the catcher's helmet?

My vote....Custom-painted hockey goalie helmet!!!!

That would be awesome! I have a Flyers helmet hanging in my family room, but I really don't want to use that. Plus it's only a replica, so one hit may split it in half.

Added: And DD is a Penguins fan, so the Flyers helmet may be a little too distracting for her :)

I got a deal on a lightly used set of catcher's gear on craigslist. Never use the chest protector, but often use the mask and shin guards.

Since OILF isn't around to do it I will do it - how about bucket mom's too? I use a pitchers mask like a Rip-It. Don't get the Boombah one though it fits too loosely no matter how you adjust it and flies off too easily if you take a ball in the face - don't ask me how I know.

I was thinking that too about bucket moms. lol
Mine can't throw a rise yet but I took one in the chin when a drop ball took a bad bounce. I wear her fielder's mask now. It's a rip-it.

Some kind of good mask. Another point of emphasis I have learned is lighting. We pitch in basement a lot and the lighting is great for everything but 57+ fastballs little alone movement pitches. I bought some cheap 4ft florescent lights and stood or proped up filling in the gaps between the overhead lights.

I'd get in contact with DDs catcher and hope that she wants to improve her game as well. My DD1 catches DD2 and yes I know we are lucky ;). I talked to DD2 catchers parents and offered them the "opportunity" to get better with her. They both have improved a ton! DD1 has always caught her pitchers and some. When she was 11 she was catching 63mph and now it seems like peanuts to her. But if there's no option and your DD throws hard, then shin guards and mask.

Ok I'll be the first to bite, 63 . . . was this an auto correct from 53?
