are there any type of shoulder press exercises that are not harmful to a pitcher? i understand strength training is important but is lifting above the head optimal?

We attended a Tincher clinic last weekend and the strength and conditioning coaches (2) strongly advised against any presses above the shoulders. They also discouraged bench press and dead lifts. They were highly in favor of any rowing or pulling type exercises for pitchers.

It may be here and I haven't seen it. If not maybe some srength coaches or other knowledgeable persons could start a sticky on pitcher specific strength training. More than just core training which I know is needed maybe just more detail

that could be a good idea since our trainer has dd doing all the exercises that seem to be bad for pitchers according to BT3100 and tincher. i just question the lifting over head heavier and heavier until something gives.

Look in the Drive Mechanics thread.... It's LOADED with pitching specific training exercises. Much of it covers building all of the stabilizer muscles that are critical for a pitcher to be able to perform the required movements...safely. And, there is VERY little if anything in there about working with heavy weight. Most cases the athlete is working wih their own body weight as resistance.

So, because my DD is a pitcher she shouldn't be doing the basic strength/power lifts to make her stronger overall? Just doesn't make sense. She does Olympic lifting along with her speed and agility and is very strong for a 14 year old. I have always attributed a lot of her pitching speed to her strength. Also if you look at ball exit speeds off the bat most girls' speeds go down from their bat speed. Her exit is actually higher than her bat speed which tells me she has the strength to muscle through the swing when she makes contact. Not sure I would want to rely on body weight only exercises

Unless you have an injury that prevents you from lifting properly, I'm not sure why any strength and conditioning coach would advise against dead-lifts???
It's probably the #1 lift for developing overall strength.

Also, just my humble opinion here, but why would they be advising against these staple lifts? Especially for female athletes....
Female's do not have the genetic make-up to where doing these lifts is going to make them huge (and somehow impede their pitching motion).
I can understand saying "focus on rows" or "focus on pull-ups", but saying "never do dead-lifts or OH press" doesn't make much sense....
