My daughter is a pitcher on a fastpitch tournament team. Her school coach wants her to try out for track Javelin and running. Will this mix up her body mechanics and hurt her arm? Will this be a positive or negative thing to do to a pitcher?
Thanks!

I don't think so two completely different motions, our HS All conference pitcher does shotput, just make sure she uses the proper technique for throwing the Javelin since just like anything else usually doing it properly will prevent injury and soreness.

Others might have different opinions, but that's my two cents

I like her coach! There are many out there who discourage their players from playing other sports. Gotta love the three sport athletes who find time to play an instrument AND go bowling with her friends...

My DD throws shotput & discus while in middle school. Too bad softball and track is the same season in high school. No middle school softball.

I'd be a little nervous about javelin in terms of injury to a throwing athlete but otherwise I think multiple sports are a good thing.

I am not on this board too often but I felt I needed to respond to this. I threw Javelin in High School and I would highly recommend NOT to have your daughter ever throw one because of injury risk to her arm. My older brother threw his arm out, I threw my arm out, and one of my best friends who was the also the quarterback of our football team threw his arm out. Without going into the details you are trying to launch a fairly heavy object as far as you possibly can and very few people at the high school level understand the motion and how to properly train for it without over stressing your arm.

I use to be a pro baseball scout. I always liked to see players play more then just baseball. As a softball dad I really want to see my daughter play multiple sports.

Javelin and shot put throwing forces the legs, core, and back muscles to develop.... These developed muscles are ALWAYS found in elite softball players.
Look up D1 players recruited to major programs. Then see how many of those girls played only softball..... About 98% of them were 2 or 3 sport athletes in middle and high school!
Different sports at different times of the year will help make here a more physically complete athlete.

Risk/reward. Go run track, play basketball, volleyball or "gasp" soccer. I'd skip the javelin unless I thought I could be better in javelin than softball.

I'd agree most D1 softball players were two or three sport athletes through middle school or junior high. My experience has been different when it comes to high school. DD played basketball and softball through 10th grade. As her coursework and training intensified it was too much to do both. She has about a dozen friends and teammates who went D1 in softball. Only one played multiple sports all four years of HS. I know that's a small sample, but I think it's the norm rather than the exception.
