Sorry to hear about your daughter's injury. Thank you for sharing the story and your thoughts about the cause and what you'd do differently. As it's snowing outside right now and we will be off dirt for several more months yet I found this info pretty interesting. My DD's are 13 (one pitcher/one catcher) and as you say "growing like weeds", given the mountain area we live in even during the summer months we spend time in the pitching cages. Sure it's padded turf/carpet but still has that "shock" factor. Caution is warranted.

Check out the link below.....it is something we went to for our pitchers in college. They were always pitching on dirt but the pounding from landing is still significant. It was a constant need for communication with the grounds crew on when/how much to water the bullpen.....when to dig up and put in new/softer clay....when/how to cover the immediate push and landing area to keep the moisture in the ground, etc.
The previous mentioned precautions regarding pitching indoors and on hard surfaces.....I think it is definitely something all parents should be concerned with.

we have one of our pitchers out right now due a stress fracture although the parents tell me its not a Pars, its a stress fracture to her lower spine, shes been out now for about 5 months and goes in for a scan next week to see how it is healing and hopefully she can start the slow transistion back to the mound and I will will say these parents just about gave up on their daughter and her pitching due to all the complications she has had with this, cause no one could figure out what the problem was, and it was 100% due to DFP that they found it :) whether or not its career ending or not is yet to be seen but bottom line is because of this site and the info on it that I forwarded it to the parents they decided to take the kiddo in to get a MRI and specifically looking for a stress fracture and found one. hopefully shes not done, and BP Im so sorry for your DD's loss due to injury hopefully she can blend into another position and find the love of the game as she did on the mound.
