DD stands for Distracted Daydreamer (darling daughter actually)....

I believe there is power in the front side that can be recruited by a hard reciprocal adduction into the body that mirrors the throwing arm adduction into the side. So I want my kid to pull everything into her body...HARD, and this results in a thigh slap.

Does she bend her glove arm elbow when she does this?

Dang! Forgot that Balswick was your PC. JJ covered it nicely. In the end, your PC is better than 95% of any other, so know that the long term benefit far outweighs anything else. Please pass on our best wishes and remind him he’s always welcome here.

While I don’t advocate for slap as a result, I don’t try to eliminate it if it’s the result of pulling down/in together to power the release.

This is my favorite post on the subject:

Here is another and aside from some drama, I think the key points are covered well:

I think his main concern is that she gets to rotational when she slaps. Maybe I should focus more on her not getting rotational? I guess that's a question for next lesson and here give me input please. Ha Dirt Diva totally my girl!

DD didn't use to glove slap but after she got back from a UCLA softball camp, Jessica Hall had taught her to slap the glove. Initially I was pissed but ultimately she kept that technique and is now "natural" for her. Many pitchers do it who are successful so I don't see any problem with it. Some naysayers will argue against it saying that it will injure the wrist or thigh (never heard that being a problem) or that the batter can time the pitcher better by hearing the slap, which is nonsense. If you watch slo-mo video, most pitchers actually release the ball before the slap so I really doubt this is going to help the batter much. There has been some very successful pitchers that slap (Cat, Jennie, Monica, Ueno,..) and this "audio cue" hasn't helped the batters much.

I think the more important issue is getting the "whirling" correct. See Rick Pauly's video and explanation of what the glove arm should be doing.

My DD used slap her glove hard on her leg. We just made a slight adjustment to "slap" or graze the back of her leg/thigh" area.
