I wanted to get some advice on the enclosed videos of my DD pitching. She just turned 13 years old. It appears from the videos that she is dragging her back leg and I am not sure the best way to correct it. It also looks more straight than most higher level pitchers. We have also been working on getting a good knee drive with her stride leg. It looks like DD is reaching with her foot instead of driving out with the knee. Any advice on drills or tips would be appreciated. I am also open to other advice on things I may be missing to help her get better. I am enclosing a slow motion video along with a couple other videos. Thanks in advance for any help.

There are interrelated movements happening that are probably the cause of a less than explosive leg "pull together".
Note how much she leans toward 3rd base....well something has to counterbalance that lean, so her drag leg/foot kicks out toward 1st base. The correction is simple to say but will be tough to change: just have her be more vertical (less lean).....that's the primary correction. Then add in a focus on pulling the legs together....the inside of her drag leg knee cap should pull to the inside of her landing leg knee cap.

Thanks Rick. She has always been able to change movements as needed after a lot of repetition but leaving that back leg straight and behind her is proving to be a little more difficult to fix.

The frame I was hoping to capture wasn't there, but I think the plots above show what I was hoping to demonstrate--which is throwing with the shoulder and little whip. If I understand how video works, I'd expect to see a much longer blur of the ball in the third frame. The IR stickies and javasource's videos would be good for addressing this. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfxecAGYoi5Hav_GIfV47yA

Thanks Ken B. We started working on some of those drills a couple of weeks ago. When DD is doing the drills she does great but then when she starts pitching full speed or in a game she resorts back to being too "busy" with her shoulders. If I can just get her to be quieter with her upper body.

Rick, I am not sure how you knew the word "vertical" would help a 13 year old understand but tonight my DD stayed taller, rarely leaned and had better brush than she has ever had. She only went around 75% during pitching after her drills but it was a great start to correct her drag leg and leaning. When I asked her if she understood what vertical meant during pitching she laughed and said she loved math and of course she knew what it meant. I guess you never know what makes them "get it". Thanks again for the tip.

you could also call it the "Y" axis :). my DD has the same issue. in practice she can get vertical and the drive leg under her hip. but at 100% distance or game time, it falls apart. stride leg gets "stuck" at the plate and kicks out to 1st. ugh.

we've been working on it and while it has improved a lot, it still remains to be be seen on the mound -- this weekend :)

just keep at it
