at 10u we pushed just hitting the corners accurately and speed, at that age if your DD has decent speed most batters will be behind so more times than not easy outs, @ 12u worked on painting corners, speed and started implementing the change and drop and testing the other breaking pitches, now at 14u cant stress how accuracy is the most important, speed is a must but takes a back seat to accuracy, and breaking pitches are huge now. my DD is finally getting the rise to work well so im excited for 1st yr 14u to see how she does with tourneys in Desmoin Ia, and Lincoln Ne coming up.

Which tournament in Des Moines?

Whenever I talk to pitchers and/or parents, every girl 13+ is hitting at least 60-62mph! Saw couple at a college camp and were getting gunned at 56-57 mph. I wouldn't get caught up in all the speed conversations as most are inflated numbers and as people posted above, TB batters can hit higher speeds, its mix of speed and movement that keeps them off guard. I don't see many pitchers striking out a lot of batters during games, rather some strike outs and good defense.

Though she's new my DD's struck out a good number of batters so far, and it's usually her change up that does it, which isn't fast at all. I've noticed at least in 10U the pitches that get them most of the time are the ones on the outside corner. Doesn't seem to matter so much how fast they are if the location is where it needs to be. Again, just talking 10U here. That is as far as my experience applies (and only 2 tournaments so far, so even that is limited).

My velocity conversations go like this:

"My DD is 10 and throws 60. How about yours?"

"She throws fast enough."

Here is a good goal for speed...find out some milestones of kids that wound up where you want your kid to be at 18U and use those as mile markers. I have polled a few people over the years and the info is surprisingly similar...and few of them even knew how fast the kid threw at 10U.

Interesting idea. I haven't really thought much beyond this year yet and I really doubt she has either. She said she wants to play college ball of someone asks but she's 9. I think she has only the vaguest idea of what that means.

My daughter is 16 now, we have always set goals high and have always fallen 1-3 miles an hour short but has gained enough to make me happy. At the same time she is reaching to find that speed that she set as the goal. As a 1st year 16 she is 5 miles an hour short of her college goal! Mechanically nearly flawless. But she does not have a super fast arm! She seems to genarate a ton of speed right at the end! Very deceptive! If she had the arm speed of my 9 year old the sky would be the limit!

its called the pumpkin smash, I cannot make due to work but she will be playing for the south Dakota krush for that tourney, then Lincoln, Neb for the boo bash for her team the south Dakota renegades both 1st yr 14u. as for speed she's 13 and throws 54-55 avg and to my knowledge never hit that 60 mark although that is the goal this up coming year. we'll have to see as we really work on movement and breaking pitches anymore vs speed.
