What causes alligator arms

I don't have any handy but what I am talking about is on the upswing before going over top, the pitcher has a big bend in her throwing arm. Lacey Waldrop seems to have that issue and I wondered if it is a timing as the upper arm would be at 9 while the lower arm would be at 10. Or 3 and 2. My daughter constantly gets a short arm herself on the frontside and it seems to be a timing issue with her.

I guess part of this depends on your definition of big. But if you watch my DD's arm circle it starts straight or maybe a very slight bend when her arm is in front of her but as it nears the top she adds more bend to the point it is noticeable when the ball is above her head. Then as her arm comes down it straightens as part of the whipping action. Is that what you are talking about or am I totally missing the point?
