Tools-

  • 48" straightedge with inch markers
  • Video camera that captures video with little blur
  • Bright sunny day
  • Unbearably obsessive nature and a deep mistrust of your Bushnell radar gun because it says you throw a paltry 58 mph overhand, which clearly must be wrong because despite your girth and hairline you are still a friggin athletic beast in your mind that stopped keeping track of time in 1999.

1) Align straightedge so that the shadow of the ball will travel over it at release.
2) Zoom in enough that the markers are legible or can at least be counted.

formula is:

(((inches in a frame)*(framerate))/12)*.681818

I estimate the error to be about 3-5% for a pitch that travels in the 15-17 inch range in a frame.
You can neglect the error from the change in the angle of the sun (it is 93 million miles away so you can use a small angle approximation).

What is this sun thing you speak of?? If I had to do anything that entailed shadows from the sun it would be months before I could pull that off.
