I use a bucket and just keep a low target. My knees are shot from basketball and there is no way I could get through catching my DD more than once a week without it. I also do a lot of work with our catchers, so I prefer to keep my limited supply of knee bending time for them.

On a bucket because I have bad knees. I feel most vulnerable during a curve.....
I try to give a low target to replicate a catchers spot. When she's at PC, the catchers squat.

In the backyard I use the little footrest thing that came with our outdoor furniture set. If I keep my glove from my knees to in front of my face, we are in the strike zone. With the foot rest thing, its angled so I sit all the way down on the low part with the higher part up between my legs. Gets me low enough for the strike zone I talked about, gives me some protection, and lets me keep a straight back. At the fields I use a bucket and just have to tell myself all the time to keep the glove down. I have a bad back, so I need to sit on something to try and keep my back as straight as I can. I normally don't catch at the fields though, its either the catchers, or one of my assistant coaches.

I used to squat, but it was too hard on my knees. Also caught a couple of bad hops to the face, so I use a bucket now. DD's knocked me off it a couple of times, but she and the PC get a good laugh out of it, so it's all good.

I'm 5'9" as well and the fancy padded bucket o'balls always seemed too high for me. DH is a stucco contractor so we always have 5 gallon empty buckets around the house. I have two filled with 11" balls, one in the basement for me to sit on while she's throwing into the Bownet, one outside for when I'm feeling too lazy to squat. No padding on those though.

The lower bucket helps me to easily keep the mitt at an appropriate height for a 10YO batter.

My dad caught for me at least 6 days a week for many years. He never even thought of a bucket. No gear and used his trusty Louisville slugger basic fielding glove. Not once did I ever hear a complaint, he did tell about 3 months ago that I broke his finger twice - said he didn't say anything because that was his issue not mine - double tough! For me? I sit on a 5 gallon shorty with a custom padded lid, my dad takes his jabs at every opportunity. It's ok though he's earned the right in my mind.

The milk crate is much better than the five gallon bucket - lower to ground and more stable
