Dont waist too much time or too much money on PCs. Learn the motion, grips , spins and then depend on your own hard work and not $50 weekly workouts. Depends on the girl but can be done without throwing big $$ down the toilet. Have seen it done.

Sure, I would guess the majority of pitchers work it out on their own. They certainly practice a ton more than when the pitching coach is around. It doesn’t need to be weekly but it is nice to have a fresh set of eyes and a “bad guy” if needed.

What I am seeing at my level (10U) is that the PC becomes great at teaching the basics and the kids then work hard to implement what they have been taught. My 3 pitchers are in group lessons at roughly 20 bucks a week and building a strong base. Come spring they will be with me solely and I'll reinforce.

No doubt at that age they need it for like I said mechanics grips and spins. When they start getting a lot of that down then you and the hard work will kick in.

Have to disagree to some extent. Started with new pc who is pure IR. Didn't teach DD any new terms she hadnt heard from me after reading here. Did a lot of same drill that we do at home me. differance is he can verbalize the the same thing different ways until she grasps it while I only know one way. He also can pick out flaws that I dont see or cant see on bucket. i have read how to hang sheetrock and tried several times, turns out i havnt done it enough for it to look good. same with a pc they have encountered many variations of a problem have several ways to fix it.

Going beyond that a little, DD's PC has been working with her for about 3 months and last lesson one of the other PC's saw something that needed fixing and pointed it out. Also, the part about picking up problems from the bucket is absolutely key. I'm way too busy trying to catch the ball to really see what DD is doing. That extra set of eyes, and changing it up every so often can be important.

This is the way I see it as well. It all depends on the PCs level of expertise and their ability to transfer that to the student. I know DDs PC picks up on things I would never see and can get DD to make corrections that I can not.

Not agreeing or disagreeing just makes for a good conversation. Tell me why a young baseball pitcher does not need a PC like a girl. Obviously , I think more fathers feel they can show their son the mechanics of baseball pitching but when it comes to getting a girl starting to pitch most fathers have no clue(my situation exactly). No 2 baseball pitchers are alike so why does it seem that the mechanics of softball pitching are so cut and dry. Once my DD reached around 14-15 and had the grips and spin and 4-5 basic pitches it was me and her(mostly her)

I think it’s rare for girl’s with parent PC’s to be successful. Most girls I’ve seen with parent PC’s quit playing because it stops being fun or never reach their potential because parents failed to identify at which point a real PC had more knowledge. I know we have several experts on this site that have found a way to make it work. I believe that’s the exception and not the rule though.

This is an interesting thread in my opinion and made me think. If somebody were to ask me who my DD's pitching coach is today I would say the name but it is really not quite that simple. The amount of time she spends with her PC is much less than when she was younger. So today you could almost argue she is her own pitching coach. Yes she still goes for periodic lessons to fix things but usually she is bringing the issues to the table that she was unable to fix on her own or with my help. But it is not even that simple. Even when she was young we spent more time together than she spent with her PC and I was taking what I learned and helped her practice. So it was like it evolved:

When she started all the knowledge and adjustments came from the pitching coach. Then over time I contributed to those adjustments based on what I learned. At that point was I her "PC" or the one we visited once a week? And now she drives most of the adjustments she makes to her mechanics and pitches. So is she her own "PC" or is it me or is it the person she visits once a month? Hope this makes sense because I think it is a continuum of support.
