hey guys

question for you. My dd throws a horseshoe change, but lately she has been throwing it a little to fast. I think she just has some extra whip on it and doesnt stop her arm and pop it out. i try to remind her to hold it tight and in the palm of her hand. When she does throw it, it is a pretty good pitch because it curves a little as well. I was just wondering if you guys had any tips to try and get that a little more consitent.

thanks

The way I have my DD throw hers is to start the IR in the forearm a little early having the palm of the hand facing her leg at release then let go in a slight pushing action and releasing all fingers at same time.

works for min 48 mph fast 35 mph change with slight curve action

:)

Perform a DFP search on "desequencing". If you understand what make a pitch fast, you can slow the change by NOT doing them:

Loose arm / tight arm
Arm whip / no whip
Finger grip / palm grip
Fingers behind the ball / less behind the ball (at release)

What are the speeds of her FB and CU BPECK? I think a lot of people overestimate how slow a change up needs to be in order to be effective. At about 15% of the FB it starts really screwing up a hitter's timing. I see a lot of slow changeups get recognized early and taken for a very long ride at 14U. Being able to throw it for a strike consistently is far more important than having it at some mythical standard 20-25% off the fastball speed.

I really havent had the speeds checked, but she does have a lesson tonight which we are able to mess around with the radar gun. I know what you are saying. I seen some changeups in 10U where they just float up there and the batter has plenty of time just to reset and t-off on them. I am not looking to get a change up like that, but some of the times, I am not even able to tell. I think she just has to much whip and her fingers are behind the ball yet which does not slow the ball down at all, as mentioned above. I will post speeds when i get them. ( she is 10)

From time to time my DD throws her change ups with her eyes closed in practice. It helps sharpen the focus on exactly what she is trying to achieve with her desired change up speed and location. It works for her and also helps tighten up her delivery. Also, don't forget to have her sell the change up in the process!

As knight recommends, get the fingers forward. As an alternative cue, if she curls her pinky, tell her to get her pinky behind the ball. This pitch also benefits from a lift of the forearm during release... keeping the upper arm back, per se...

definitely sells it.. sometimes she grunts on her FB, so she even grunts on the CU :)

How slow can you throw a pitch from 43 feet for a strike? What would that pitch look like?

It amazes me more pitchers don't throw that pitch.

What is funny is My DD uses the same grip "4-seam" for every pitch she throws so I have taught her to on the fly throw her change up when a bunter shows early enough its quite funny to see the change-up come in and fall right under there bat a be-wildered look in the batters eyes. Does not work every time but when it does it is hillarious
