It stands for internal rotation. It's a process found in high level pitching mechanics
Looks like you need to visit the pitching forum. There are countless threads concerning IR and drive mechanics.

internal rotation - definition of internal rotation by Medical dictionary

It is an anatomical term that also describes part of the pitching motion. This type of movement is also part of many other motions, even part of hitting is internal rotation. Not many use the term out side of here. None of the other motions with this or other types of movement use the term to define technique that I know of.

Internal and External Rotation | Golf Loopy - Play Your Golf Like a Champion

It was coined as a cure to the HE type of finish that came about in the Jenny Finch era, but many players, PCs, and others understand whip without the term. For example, even though there are proper techniques involved in throwing, we don't say use your "internal rotation" throw (or whatever the term would be) from the outfield. Analyzers (and physical therapists, etc.) like this type of term, but I don't think young players need to know these terms to throw, hit a golf ball, pitch, etc. successfully.

Sound advice. Teach them to do something but don't tell them what it is they are doing. We have to pass the bill before we know what is in it.

Depends on the age.... I have no problem at all referring to "internal rotation" and "brush interference" with sixteen-year-olds.

So, I'm going to stick my neck out and let people throw tomatoes (or knives) at me.

IR can be used in three different ways:

1) IR can refer to the pronation of the forearm from 3 continuing into the release into the follow through. (Pronation is the rotation of the thumb "over the top" of the forearm.)
2) IR can refer to the rotation of the shoulders and body from open to slightly closed.
3) IR also refer to the entire pitching motion from 12 to release, which would include IR(1) and IR(2).

Here is a video showing IR(1), IR(2) and IR(3). Notice the way the hand rotates from palm up at 9 to palm down after release.

We've discussed IR a lot on this board. All high level pitchers use IR (including Jenny Finch).

I prefer JJSqueeze's nomenclature of referring to IR(1) as pronation and IR(2) as Internal rotation, but you can see it used in different ways.

Ray, where did that clip come from? BTW.....I/R in the pitching motion begins at the bicep turning from back to front, and finishes with pronation. Pronation is useless in the pitching motion without I/R of the humerus.

It's nothing new. HOWEVER..........Here's how I see my participation in its "discovery".

There was a time when the population of the world thought the earth was flat. When in fact the world was always round.........So then, why do we refer to Ferdinand Magellan as the discoverer of the world being round as he completed his voyage around the world. Did he discover the world was round? The fact is the world was already round before he discovered it was.

Columbus discovered the new world. But wait, the new world in fact already existed before he discovered it. So what is his claim to fame? After all, the new world "wasn't anything new", it always existed.

Well, that's how I see my writings on I/R. Did I discover it? Even though "it's nothing new" and always existed in high level deliverys?

The world was always round, and the new world always existed before it was discovered.

So I guess my contribution depends on your definition of "discovered".........I like to think of it more as exposure of a previously misunderstood fact.

It isn't new. Unless you didn't know it existed previous to reading about it here.........

Which is the case for about 100% the people here, and 99% of the rest.....

BM has displayed a lot of patience and has been very open in helping people understand IR. He definitely opened my eyes to it.

BM: Someone discovered a pitching instruction video from Ueno's pitching coach. The whole thing is in Japanese. There was this section showing this young lady doing the drill. She is easier on the eyes than you, so I made the clip. You can really see the palm up at 9 in the video.
