I should've known. And here I was thinking OLIF used her magic "hands off" method to get this kid where she is in 3 lessons. Although I have to say that this poor kid is really struggling because of how complicated his teaching methods are. After all he uses complicated terms like Internal rotation, flexion/extension, spin axis etc.

She would get it much faster with simpler words like "off kilter spin" and the like.

Chris - it was great meeting you as well! Funny, on the long ride home (5 hrs!) and with a sleeping kid in the car I found myself thinking on several occasions "Man, does that Chris guy LOVE the game of softball!". Wrt your DD, wow- what a powerhouse. Lots of good stuff going on from what I see. Hope to see you again soon.

And as for my love...I drive 3.5 hours total...you drive 10 :) you've got me beat 3 fold!

Hope to see you again soon too! If I don't run into you next weekend, Happy holidays!

What is the purpose of the tip toe 3/4? Thanks

The simple explanation is that it prevents her front leg from collapsing when she strides. If you watch the video of her in the pink, she's "sitting" into the pitch. The tip toe drill is helping to reinforce the stronger front leg and staying tall into the pitch.

The tip toe deal is something I use when posture is getting in the way of a pitcher learning to throw the ball underhand correctly. It helps me minimize their knee collapsing, butt sticking out, and chest flaring forward. If you look at the first graphic, you can see that this was the case... posture prevented this pitcher from sequencing muscle activations in the upper half, correctly... dominant, larger muscles were winning out. On some pitchers... posture becomes a preventative when trying to take them 'up' the progression I use... which is nearly identical to BM's I/R progression... lock-it, 9, liberty, show-it, full throw (I call them 84, 93, flex-it, show-it...). Some will find that once you get to liberty and beyond... the neuromuscular strategies a pitcher uses has them abducting in more of a Hans & Franz kind of way... than straight up with good posture. As such, pulling... or leading with the elbow on the back half so that it is oriented down... is just not happening. They simply need to be reprogrammed... and I find this the quickest way. Remember, the goal is to teach them to THROW correctly underhand FIRST... then pitch... which you cannot do unless the body is in the right position.

This tip toe deal is an exception, not a rule to learning how to throw a ball underhand... or simply put, as necessary. It's simple... tell them to get way up on their tip toes... and stay there through the FORWARD step and throw. "Get tall, stay tall". Once they learn and exhibit the correct underhand throwing form, they proceed onward without it. You'll notice that in the comparison SBMom posted of tip toe vs regular, she is 'getting there'.

The 3/4 drill is a good posture drill... which is why I combine it with the tip toe deal for this girl... in that it involves coming over the top and getting into a good whip position... which is really the whole 'throwing' sequence.
