There is no correlation between height and pitching effectiveness (or durability). This is one of those old school fallacy's that won't die.

I would agree that taller pitchers get more opportunities, hence the self fulfilling prophecy.

I agree as well, some make decisions based on height. My own DD's coach made an exception in my DD's case, she like her pitchers tall.
My DD was 5'6" and could throw in the mid 60's. The junior was a 6' Canadian that could never throw it past 54mph. They saw potential in her height.

a bit heavy handed there Sluggers. If you guys deleted every post that didn't answer the OPs question or that beat a dead horse there wouldn't be a technical hitting forum and my post count would be 3...and didn't you just delete a bunch of posts that answered the OPs question 3 about examples of top notch pitchers of average height (Ueno, Tincher, etc.)?

This is something I've been pondering a bit lately. Will differences in height cause/require any differences in mechanics . . .

Will a shorter pitcher need to use her body differently then a taller pitcher in minor ways due to the shorter levers. Will they require more strength in their core and lower extremities to make up for shorter legs that won't naturally have the same reach . . .

Other than Amanda are there other top notch pitchers in the mid 5 foot range that I can be looking at?

Thanks :)

My DD is 5'7" and she has not had to do anything obvious with her mechanics. Now her hands are small even for her height so she has had to play with grips especially the riseball to make it work for her hands. So you may go through times when a PC will show her a grip that she might have trouble using and she might have to create her own variation.

Edit: the one thing I will say and I am not sure if it has to do with height but if you look at her at 12 o'clock she does have more elbow bend than most pitchers I see. Maybe she is compensating due to shorter levers or it is just what works for her. Ok now I am done! :)

Thanks Sluggers. We sometimes have a tendency to get distracted.

Being an Arizona Wildcat fan, I've watched a couple mid-height pitchers. Check out video of Taryn Mowatt (5'6"), she was pretty effective. Nancy Bowling (5'8") might have a good year in spring, our freshman from SoCal, Trish Parks is pretty fast for 5'8" too. Candrea got Danielle O'Toole (5'8") from SDSU, but she has to sit out this spring, so look at her SDSU vids.

Usually there are at least one or two on-topic posts before the thread goes off the rails...this one we got 10 posts, none of which directly answered the questions posed by the OP. (I've given corlay the benefit of the doubt).

Thanks Sluggers. We sometimes have a tendency to get distracted.

Me too...I was about to launch into a full bio-mechanical engineering breakdown when I thought, "Hmmm...maybe I should read the OP for a change."

His question is interesting...I've never thought about it, so I'm interested to hear what people say.

I answered one question, I didn't know the rules were you had to answer all three or your post would be deleted.

Yes there were some direct responses to the OP.

There are also some good comparisons in the model pitchers sticky (I think that's the one) that discuss mechanical differences between the Ueno-types and the Hollowell types.

The post-turkey catatonia is kicking in before Thanksgiving...no one apparently read the post.

The OP did not ask about whether tall pitchers are better than short pitchers. (I am deleting posts that say, basically, "Tall pitchers are better than short pitchers", "Oh yeah?" and "Yeah!".)

The OP's questions are:

I'm looking forward to javasource's comments.

Not cool deleting posts, arbitrarily. For example my original post cited Lisa F as an example of a smaller pitcher and one to emulate. I also listed that smaller pitchers have to maximize all mechanics and I also listed that top pitchers tend to be very tall and listed examples.

By the way, Java is great but not the only one with opinions and life experiences to share here.

P.S. you deleting helpful posts has really detailed this thread. Maybe we need to delete your posts?

There you go guys...20 posts of useless information. Enjoy.

Here is a real gem:

In general, I think smaller pitchers need to maximize every thing they have to be very effective.

Funny...I thought *every* pitcher had to maximize everything in order to be effective.
