Good to hear. Unfortunately some have no realistic plan B and it becomes a company paid uniform, a name tag and the question of fries or onion rings. :)

it was a bit of a shocker, but when I asked DD, she said she wasn't sure if she wanted to play/pitch in college.
after a bit of questioning, she said it was too early to think about college. after all, DD is only 13.

What we decided that she still practices with as much intensity with her pitching/hitting as if she will play in college then she can decide when she's a junior or senior if is a go or no go or if the opportunity will even be available.

fair enough?

I think you got it right.

The recruiting process is a completely different skill set that requires a lot of attention in the future but at 13, unless you're being forced to contemplate because of interest, focus on being a good player who loves softball and train like there's no tomorrow.

I'll leave you with the 3 things I would have wanted to know in your position

1. Opinions and insight are always based on personal experiences. No 2 coaches recruit the same and Broad generalizations about them are usually guesses based upon limited experience. Coaches love to talk to kids. If you really want to know, Pick up the phone

2. College softball is an extension of a journey for some and the stopping point for others. Either way, if it ends tomorrow, it had better have been worth it. ... In other words enjoy process of the blood, sweat and tears. Do no harm to your personal relationship with your kid in the quest for something she MAY want to do 5 years from now.

3. Educating your child better be a little more thought out than what coach walked into the park that day. Focus on who she is and what she wants to be and I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that when you have that that answer......the school probably has a softball team.

This approach is applicable in other ways (e.g. academics) too. Our kids ultimately decide what they want to do with their life. Our role as parents is to prepare them to make a good informed decision and to have lots of good options from which to choose.
