While this has been discussed in several different threads, I thought it would be good for this great drill to have a thread of its own.

Is that his lock it in drill because he is taking his elbow back off his body that would be so much easier for my DD :)

This is the "Unlock it Drill"........Or 9:00 drill........

Lets be clear on the use of my drills. The "Lock it in" drill, the for the VERY BEGINNING stages of learning to throw the ball underhand properly with INternal Rotation. It for students who've never tried, or cannot understand the feeling of throwing a ball underhand without pushing the ball to the target..........It's the VERY BEGINNING STAGE of learning to create a whip action with the use of I/R........

Once a NEW student has a fairly good feel for how to throw the ball underhand WITHOUT PUSHING THE BALL, the "Unlock it" drill should be used. D, your DD is a candidate for "Unlocking" the elbow........

The biggest problem we have is allowing TOO MUCH BACKSWING and losing the isolation of the progress of learning the whipping action associated with an I/R delivery.........

Thanks, Chairman of the Board, Boardmember!

Now it would be nice if this thread could remain focussed on this drill and what it is to accomplish.

I would argue that this simple motion is a prerequisite to ending up with a whippy arm, which I think is necessary to reach maximum velocity when increasing velocity is the aim.

I am working with this with my DD. However, she states just above her hip bone hurts because she smacks her elbow to it. I try to explain that she needs to rotate sooner so she brushes her lower arm. I know she does brush because I can hear it when she pitches. Is this common? Am I right that she needs to IR before her elbow hits her hip bone? Thanks I know it is difficult without video. I am planning on getting an I phone for the slo motion video it takes.

She shouldn't be smacking her elbow to her hip, nor should you hear it. Look at Boardmember's clip of the drill again. I doubt anyone hears his brush.

Maybe I post in the wrong thread.she smacks her hip when she is pitching full through from the start.is this due to not rotating sooner.
