How much pull should there be in the upper arm coming down the backside say from 11 till brush or is it just the arm speed carries the arm around the rest of the way??

you can tell me if this is stupid question because it might be I am just not sure

thanks :)

I've heard PC say both "pull down" and "whip/accelerate" the arm as its on the downward motion. I've thought they meant the same thing.

I guess a better way to say it is I know you pull the ball around aka it lags the elbow, what I mean how much do you pull the upper arm down from 11 till brush meaning is it a gradual pull or do you try pull it down as fast as you can

and like I said it might be a dumb question but Just curious :)

Great question and not sure I can definitely answer, but I'll give it a shot. There is at least one instructor I can think of that says gravity takes over from about 12. I disagree. For me the it starts with putting everything into sequence from the drive and feeling the timing of the whip into the plant. It's difficult to explain unless you've felt it. For most folks, the timing just happens unless it's been drilled out of them. When you allow the lower arm to lag loosely along with good timing, the speed of the arm circle just happens. I think it can vary depending on how the drive timing begins. If you follow the guidelines for creating a strong drive in the Drive Mechanics thread, and learn to whip with a loose lower arm--this stuff kinda takes care of itself...

Looking forward to reading JS's much more technical response.

Hope that was helpful,
Ken

I will add that I think pull increases from about 9 into release.

I guess the reason I struggle with the question is because pulling sounds to muscular. I see it more as an intensification of the whip action of the forearm, hand, and fingers as the upper arm actually slows down as it approaches perpendicular (down).

It does seem to contradict, but try this: Make a relatively slow arm circle but put full effort into whip/release. When do you feel the urge to accelerate the pull?
